Past Studies

The Hope Clinic has successfully completed recruitment in a number of vaccine studies related to HIV, HPV, influenza, yellow fever, and even Ebola. See below for some of these.

HVTN Studies in Follow Up

HVTN 910 A clinical trial to assess the persistence of HIV vaccine-induced seropositivity (VISP) in participants who received a vaccine in a DAIDS funded preventive HIV vaccine trial. This study allows HIV-negative participants to have two HIV tests per year until they have three consecutive test results that show no vaccine-induced antibodies to HIV.

HVTN 117 The purpose of this study is to assess the safety/tolerability of the 2 different vaccine regimens of priming with trivalent Ad26.Mos.HIV and boosting with trivalent Ad26.Mos.HIV and Clade C gp140 plus adjuvant or priming with tetravalent Ad26.Mos4.HIV and boosting with Ad26.Mos4.HIV and Clade C glycoprotein (gp)140 plus adjuvant. Immune responses of the different vaccine schedules will be assessed.

Janssen Study 118 A clinical research study being conducted to determine the safety and effectiveness of an investigational vaccine for the prevention of HIV.

HVTN 119 (HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Network) A clinical research study being conducted in Atlanta to determine the safety and effectiveness of an investigational vaccine for the prevention of HIV. You may qualify if you are a healthy adult between the ages of 22 - 50 and are HIV negative. Compensation is provided to volunteers for their time and travel.

HVTN 120 (HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Network)  A clinical research study in Atlanta to evaluate the safety and tolerability of an experimental HIV vaccine.

HVTN 124 A clinical trial research study investigating 2 experimental vaccines against HIV. One of them is a DNA vaccine. The DNA in the vaccine tells the body to make 5 proteins that are similar to proteins from HIV. The second vaccine is a protein vaccine. The vaccine is made of 4 man-made proteins that match 4 of the proteins the body makes from the DNA vaccine. In this study, the protein vaccine also includes an adjuvant called GLA-SE. An adjuvant is a substance used to increase the body’s responses to a vaccine.

HVTN 706 (Mosaico) The Mosaico clinical trial is designed to test whether an HIV vaccine will work in preventing HIV infection in healthy individuals. The goal of this study is to evaluate the immune responses of 2 HIV vaccines in men and transgender individuals who have sex with men. Please contact Rameses Frederick at rameses.frederick@emory.edu or 404-712-9076 if interested in participating.

HPTN Studies in Follow-Up

Amp Study The Antibody-Mediated Study (Closed) is a clinical trial research study to investigate the usefulness of an antibody to prevent HIV among non-HIV infected adults at risk of HIV-infection.

083 (Infiniti) The infinity study evaluates whether Cabotegravir (CAB), an investigational new drug is as safe and works as well as FDA-Approved Truvada (Pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP) in protecting individuals with high sexual exposure from acquiring HIV.  PrEP is an anti-HIV medication taken once daily that keeps HIV negative people from becoming infected with HIV.

Norovirus Study is a research study done to determine the safety and tolerability of the Snow Mountain Virus (SMV) and the number of norovirus particles needed to make a person sick. Noroviruses are the most common cause of gastroenteritis (stomach flu).

H7N9  vaccines to fight potential influenza pandemics.

VAX2 004 AA Chicken Pox Vaccine Immunology looked at understanding the immune responses in the blood as well as in the bone marrow through aspiration.

Zika Natural History Study  looked at the effects of the Zika virus on the body. This information is used to help develop a vaccine as well as better diagnostic and therapeutic tools in the future.

CDiff study  The Cdiffense Clostridium Difficile Vaccine Trial is a clinical trial research study to investigate a vaccine against the clostridium difficile "C. diff". C Diff is a disease common among recently hospitalized individuals, particularly those of older age

Micro Biome Study A new clinical trial research study in need of volunteers who are willing to donate a stool sample.

Influenza Heavy Water Study  A clinical trial research study to investigate the immune responses to the seasonal flu vaccine and to track the responses using special water called heavy water. Participants must be between the ages of 18-45 and can not have had the flu shot in the past three years.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Study
The Hope Clinic is working on a research study to see how common viral infections are in those ≥50 years of age. We need healthy adults ≥ 50 years of age to help us learn more about RSV, and help us determine if adults could benefit from a vaccine.

VRC 313 The VRC 313 study is seeking to determine if an experimental encephalitis vaccine is safe and if there are any side effects.  The vaccine will be given as a shot in the arm.

ComboPEP The purpose of this study is to understand how well a single dose of an antibiotic called doxycycline and an anti-HIV medication called Biktarvy® reach parts of the body that could be exposed to sexually transmitted infections. These medications might be considered for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) regimens in the future. The study drugs provided will not protect you from HIV or treat any active infection. This study will consist of 20 healthy, HIV-negative men and women, aged 18-59, who have sex with men. Eligible participants will take one dose of the study drugs and return to the clinic for 10 follow-up visits over the span of one week. Biological samples will be taken at each follow-up visit to examine the concentration of the study drugs in them. Types of biological samples include blood, urine, urethral swabs, penile swabs, rectal and vaginal swabs, and rectal or vaginal and cervical biopsy collections. Compensation is provided for each completed visit.

Couples This study looks to understand the effects on the rectum of abstinence, frequent receptive anal intercourse (RAI) with a condom, and frequent RAI without a condom in adult men who have sex with men (MSM). We are specifically looking for men who are currently in a monogamous relationship.

In this study, participants will undergo a screening visit with a blood draw and then three study visits with a blood draw and rectal sampling.

ED PrEP The aim of this study is to better understand how biomarkers, such as those found in blood, urine, and hair, might be used to confirm self-reported adherence to event-driven PrEP or ED PrEP.

We plan to enroll HIV-negative cisgender men who have sex with men not currently taking PrEP or PEP, and who reports having sex with another person assigned male sex at birth.

Rectal STI The purpose of this study is to understand how the immune system in the rectum of young men who have sex with men is altered by the presence of asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections (STI), specifically gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis.

Eligibility: The population being studied for this protocol will be HIV negative or HIV positive YMSM between the ages of 18-29 years.

Compensation: Participants will receive $25 for completion of study visit 1 and $125 for completion of study visit 2.

RM Injury We seek to determine if the rectums of persons who engage in receptive anal sex (aka-bottom) heal differently than those who do not.

We plan to recruit HIV-negative cisgender men.
